Secondary schools across Co Kildare began the first day of a nationwide strike which has angered parents and students.
Teachers in Naas CBS, St Mary's College and Gael Cholaiste Chill Dara all left their classrooms and held pickets outside the school gates.
Members of the ASTI are looking for equal pay for newly-qualified teachers. Today is the first in a series of seven days of strike action on the issue. However there was some hope this afternoon as ASTI President Ed Byrne has said the union might agree to temporarily suspend its planned withdrawal from supervision and substitution, if members are offered improved terms on permanent contracts for more recently qualified teachers.
