“Royston Swimming Pool is something of a white elephant in Newbridge – it’s an outdoor swimming pool, who in their right mind thought up that plan n the first place? KCC leased the site from the then owner in 1972 and an outdoor pool was built (in this climate, I ask you!)”
According to Cllr Aspell of Newbridge Kildare MD, the pool only stayed open for 3-4 years and the site or rather ‘hole’ has been lying idle for almost 40 years.
“There is only 6 years left on the the lease, before the site is handed back to the current owner. However, I feel this site which is next to Royston amenity would be an asset to the club as an extension of the car park. Royston is a wonderful amenity and is constantly in usage, both for sporting and social events. The boxing club enjoys massive success, there’s an active pitch & putt club, a really busy Bridge Club and it's used frequently for fundraisers and community events”.
Cllr Aspell expressed his frustration in raising the matter with KCC.
“I asked them in September about the site and was told to put it on the agenda for October’s Council meeting. I raised it then and Council officials didn’t even know the correct details of ownership, believing it to belong to Royston. I knew this wasn’t the case and raised the same question in November – to be told they’ll have an answer for me in December!”
Furthermore, Cllr Aspell say KCC pursue landowners and developers to restore or clean up un-developed lands. “And yet, this site in a disgraceful state, in a prime area where it could be of use to Newbridge community. Bit hypocritical really….”
Cllr Aspell believes talks should be held now to “Fill the hole, restore the site and hand it back to the owner or investigate the possibility of Royston Sport & Social Club utilising it. As it is, It’s a white elephant – 40 years a white elephant!”
