Teachers and students at the Kildare Academy of Dance are preparing to host a spectacular street party and dance event on Main Street, Naas this New Year’s Day. The event, which will kick off at 1pm, aims to raise vital funds for the iconic Moat Theatre. Following last Saturday’s surprise dance flash mob which took shoppers on Main Street by surprise, over 5, 000 people are expected to flock to the New Year’s Day fundraising event to ‘Dab’ in unison to James Brown. JennyMacMahon, Director of the Kildare Dance Academy and her troop of dancers will take to the stage to lead mums, dads, boys and girls in a fun dance by the one and only James Brown. The Kildare Academy of Dance has a longstanding relationship with The Moat Theatre and Director Jenny McMahon felt compelled to take action when she realised the difficulties currently facing the venue. Speaking about the event, Jenny MacMahon, Director of Kildare Academy of Dance says:“The Moat Theatre is in need of major upgrades, particularly in areas of sound, lighting, scenery, rigging and seating, all of which is estimated to cost up to €250,000. When I heard about this situation I was determined to help. I came up with the concept and approached The Moat, who have been incredibly supportive and enthusiastic about this project.“The arts play a vital role in bringing the community together. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a beautiful and historic theatre right in the heart of Naas town but we must support it as much as possible to keep this important facility alive. To secure the future of The Moat Theatre, we are appealing to local businesses and the local community to get behind this exciting fundraising project.” The New Year’s Day street party promises a host of activities for the whole family to enjoy including face painting, street performers and live entertainment from local band Created by Comets. The event will take place on Naas Main Street from 1pm and is open to all the family. People are encouraged to dress up and have as much fun as possible!
