Parents want barriers outside Kildare school after serious crash at school gates

Parents of children attending Kildare Town Community School have called for safety barriers to be erected outside the school following a potentially dangerous collision last week.  A crash between a car and a van resulted in the van mounting the footpath and ending up on the green play area of the nearby housing estate (below) The incident happened on the Dunmurry Road on Thursday evening at 5pm when there were no students in the area. There is a total of around 850 pupils in the school. Luckily, both drivers walked away from the incident with minor injuries. Parent Shirley O'Leary told KildareNow: "If this collision had happened at school lunchtime or when school was finishing there would have been numerous students in the area where the van mounted the footpath. There could have been countless casualties. "There are no barriers around the pedestrian crossing and nothing stopping this from happening again. "We are looking for support and publicity to demand that the council put this as top priority, all other schools have crash barriers around the crossings and we want the same for out schools also ramps need to be placed on the  approach roads to the school." Parents have also contacting their local TDs and councillors on this issue.
