Scoil Mhuire Community School, Clane is hosting a 6k Run/Walk in aid their Outreach Zambia project on Saturday 19th May at 11am. The event is organised to help raise funds for a volunteering trip that a group of 10 students and some teachers are undertaking in June. While there, the team will be working in the Cheshire Home, which is a home for young people with disabilities. The Cheshire Home is run by the Presentation Sisters in Mongu, Zambia. As well as working on the ground while in Zambia, they would also like to provide financial assistance to the Presentation Sisters as they build a rehabilitation centre for young people with disabilities so they are fundraising to bring money out to help with this.
Students travelling to Zambia include: Grainne Lawlor, Martha Graham, Eimear O Flaherty, Roisin Maguire, Niamh Whitely, Dearbhla Martin, Holly Stack, Aidan Quinn and Cathal Mc Garr & Clane Athletics Club members: Katie Hawkins, Sarah Millea, Amy O’Sullivan, Aine Maguire.

This is a huge undertaking for the school and a wonderful opportunity for the ten exceptional students who have worked so hard to be selected. They have gone through a rigorous interview process and have been working extremely hard in order to raise the funds required to make this trip a success. The group are well on the way to raising their target sum of €40,000 and they are hoping that their last fundraising activity will get them over the line. Scoil Mhuire has a long standing relationship with Zambia. In 2005 Scoil Mhuire was invited by the Presentation Sisters to take part in a new project called the Global Education Experience. The aim of which was to give students and teachers the opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture and life of people living in the developing world. The first trip took place in 2006 , where the staff and students travelled to Kalomo in Southern Zambia. They worked primarily in the schools and visiting the sick in their homes. It was a life changing experience for all involved and again in 2011 another trip to Kalomo took place, this time the students worked on farms , helped with the distribution of medicines and participated in the daily working of the local school in Kalomo. It has been the vision of teachers in the school to give another group of students the opportunity to experience the life and culture of Zambia. The event starts and finishes at Scoil Mhuire with an attractive 6k route out of Clane towards Butterstream and Loughanure and finishing back at the school where there will be refreshments afterwards. It’s a very popular route among locals. The event is chipped timed by Pop Up Races. There will be prizes for the winners of the male and female category and winners of the junior and senior student categories. Participants will also receive a finisher medal. You can register online with Pop Up Races. Like our facebook page Outreach Zambia – Scoil Mhuire Clane or phone the school on 045 868121 for more information. Please join us for an enjoyable day and support a wonderful cause.
