Kildare based Michael Moriarty to receive Albert Schweitzer Award

"ETBI is pleased to acknowledge the Albert Schweitzer Leadership for Life Award to our General Secretary, Michael Moriarty for his endless work and leadership in the area of education, training and structural reform" said a representative of ETBI.

Michael will be presented with the Albert Schweitzer Award at the Graduation Gala Dinner of the 8th Annual International Youth Leadership Conference, hosted this week at St Patrick’s College, Maynooth. The award ceremony will be held in the Glenroyal Hotel, Maynooth, Co Kildare, tonight, Friday July 29. 

Michael Moriarty has spent much of his working life involved in education and training. He began his working career as a teacher and subsequently served as a school principal in Killeshin National School, having graduated from UCD with a degree in history, economics and political economy. Thereafter, he established and was CEO of CKR (Carlow Kildare) Radio.

He was General Secretary of the Irish Vocational Education Association (IVEA) for a number of years before his current appointment as General Secretary of Education and Training Boards Ireland (ETBI), which is the representative body for Ireland's 16 regional Education and Training Boards. In 2014, Michael was elected President of the European Federation of Education Employers (EFEE) representing education employers at all levels in education across the European Union.

In this role, he has addressed many conferences throughout Europe on education and training issues, often speaking on themes of educational disadvantage and improving access to education. Michael has recently retired from the board of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland and was also recently a member of the board of FÁS, the former national training authority. He has also been President of Carlow Chamber of Commerce and is currently a member of the executive committee of North Kildare Chamber of Commerce.
