Kildare’s Display Takes Them To Top Spot
Near neighbours Kildare Town bowling club and Brownstown bowling club always produce a great sporting rivalry anytime they clash in any fixture, let it be in league or championship. This Division 1 league fixture on the 21st Nov. played in the Educate Together School; Melitta Road Kildare was no exception, especially on one mat where we witnessed a fabulous game of bowls between to evenly matched sides.Brilliant Contest
Mat 1: After the first couple of ends it was obvious that there was going to be very little separating the sides at the finish. On the first end the home team were first to set the pace by recording a score of two. But on the next end Brownstown got off the mark with a score of one, and on the third end had the sides level at two scores apiece. We were now seeing the best from both camps as would be expected from players of this calibre. On the next few ends the visitors had moved ahead by three, under normal circumstances it would seem a reasonable advantage, but in a match such as this there were no sure bets on this one.
The home team once more fought back and within a few ends had not alone reined in their opponents but went ahead by the minimum of margins. Brownstown again met the challenge head-on and within two ends had restored their lead of three. What a contest for mere mental strength and concentration and ‘top drawer’ bowling from both teams. The question now was could the visitors hold on to their advantage this time? Kildare had other ideas and on the next two ends had levelled the game for the second time. Second last end the home side were back in the lead, but only by one score. So now the die was cast for a thrilling last end. Sadly for Brownstown the home side finished as they started and recorded a score of two and there ended a brilliant contest. Final score: Kildare 15 Brownstown 12. Kildare: Anne Gleeson, Jim Condron, Richie Baker and John Gleeson. Brownstown: Eilish Vardy, Martin Sinnott, Moira Behan and Antoinette Doyle.
Devastating Form
Mat 2: Apart from the first couple of ends this game completely ended up really as nothing more than a practice match for Kildare. I have never seen a Brownstown team so completely and more surprisingly ‘out of sorts’ as in this game. Try as they might, they never got into the game at all. With Kildare in such devastating form and their opponents hitting one of those nights that is every player’s nightmare on those rare occasions, it was a foregone conclusion as to the result of this one.
Kildare: Margaret Gorry, Eddie Heffernan, Frank Connolly, Mark Caldwell and sub E. Hennessy. Brownstown: Lily Higgins, Joe Martin, Mary Stynes and Michael McMahon. With Kildare taking all five points it propels them to the top of the table.
