108 babies were born alive and left to die after abortion procedures took place in Ireland.
The figure was revealed to Deputy Mattie McGrath following a question to the Minister for Health in the Dáil.
The letter revealed that between 2019 and 2024, 108 babies who were meant to be aborted were born alive.
47 of those babies were either over the 24-week gestation period, or else weighed more than 500g.
The other 61 babies were either less than 24 weeks in gestation or less than 500g.
“This is truly shocking and outrage everyone, regardless of your personal stance on abortion itself,” Deputy McGrath wrote on Instagram following the release of the figures.
Of the 108 babies born alive, 76 had major congenital anomalies, meaning they had significant structural or functional defects, such as spina bifida or Down syndrome.
2023 saw the highest number of babies survive abortions, with 29 being born alive.
The figures released came from The National Perinatal Epidemiology Centre, which conducts Ireland’s Perinatal Mortality National Clinical Audit.
