The Kildare Chamber say that more than 10,000 visitors will come to the county this summer as the World Amateur Golf Team Championships are set to be staged in Maynooth.

The big event, which features the world's best male amateur golfers, will be taking place in Carton House in September, with the women's event set to get underway on August 29.

Teams from 72 countries will compete in the tournament in Maynooth, and the majority of the competitors will stay at a special “Championship Village" styled campus in Maynooth University.

The women’s world championship for the Espirito Santo Trophy gets underway first, and a week later the men’s teams will arrive to take part in the Eisenhower Trophy competition.

10,000 spectators and over 1,000 players and officials will visit Kildare and Allan Shine, CEO of the Chamber said this morning, “This is the first time the event is been hosted in Ireland and we are extremely delighted that Carton House is the host venue.

"It will be a welcomed economic boost for North Kildare and restaurants, bars, hotels and visitor attractions will all benefit from this two week golf festival.  Spectators will be able to see up close the future stars of golf as previous participants include Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and  Annika Sorenstam.”
