9:28 Monday 20th of March 2017

Millions of euros is set to be invested in a major upgrade on Punchestown. 80 jobs are expected to be created with the construction work due to begin after next month's Punchestown Festival.

The fate of a €6.2 million up-grade of Punchestown Racecourse is anticipated to be known today.

The project, announced in December of 2015, is in receipt of a €2.5 million Horse Racing Ireland grant.

The Blackhall Racing Company is  seeking permission for the demolition of the existing old external stand and the construction of  a new three storey trackside stand.

This part of the development, phase one, will cost an estimated €3.8 million.

Kildare County Council is scheduled to issue its decision on today.

Should it be granted, work won't commence until after the Punchestown Festival.

The project is expected to generate 80 direct and indirect jobs.
