A Yellow Alert wind warning has been issued for Kildare and the rest of Leinster for tomorrow as Storm Frank is set to batter the island.

Met Eireann forecasters said southerly winds will reach speeds of 45 to 65 km/hour with gusts of 90 to 109 km/hr.

The alert, which is the second highest, is valid from 12 noon tomorrow until 6am the following morning.

Winds are currently gusting up to 70 km per hour in Co Kildare and motorists have reported dangerous gusts on the N7 and M7 this morning.

An Orange Alert wind warning is in place for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare and Kerry.

Experts are predicting winds of up to 80 kilometres per hour and gusts of up to 120 kilometres per hour in those areas.

The National Coordination Group, which met today to assess extreme weather, advised the public to be vigilant when travelling on roads as there may be local flooding.

A spokesman added: "In the coming days high winds may also bring down trees so travelling at reduced speeds in the affected areas is also advised."

The Irish Coast Guard is advising members of the public to stay away from coastal areas, especially piers, due to dangerous weather conditions.

The Irish Coast Guard has responded to a number of incidents today on the east coast of Ireland, in which people with small children in prams got into difficulty.
