Well-known Kildare photographer Adrian Melia passed away last night after bearing his illness with courage and dignity.
Several fundraisers were held across the county in recent months to help the popular photographer seek specialist treatment abroad for colon cancer which had spread to his liver.
The Friends of Adrian Melia fundraising group said this morning: "We have learned with great sadness that our dear friend Adrian Melia's hard fought battle with illness is over.
"Our deepest sympathies to Adrian's family and to Jeannie, his partner. May he rest in peace."
Adrian says: "I need your help please to go for advanced cancer treatment abroad after doctors here have told me there is nothing more they can do for me.
Adrian's many friends have been paying tributes this morning and have described him as a gentleman who always had a smile on his face.
In a career spanning over 30 years, Adrian captured countless sporting moments the length and breadth of Kildare as well as across Ireland.
He was a very familiar figure at sporting fixtures and always had a smile and a friendly word for supporters.
Adrian was also a leading member of the Toastmasters organisation.
Adrian underwent six months of chemotherapy in 2015 and 2016 and the tumour in his colon was removed in May 2016.
However doctors were unable to operate on his liver to remove the tumours.
The funeral arrangements will be announced in coming days.
