People rescued from house fire in Kildare Town

Kildare Fire Service firefighters battled a serious blaze in Kildare Town earlier this afternoon.

Passers-by said they witnessed a number of people being taken out upstairs windows as smoke billowed from the two-storey house.

The fire was located in a building on Claregate Street.

Several units from Fire Stations in Newbridge and Monasterevin attended the scene.

A number of ambulances were also seen travelling en route to the area.

There were traffic diversions at the scene for a time.

Gardai later began a forensic examination of the building in an effort to determine the cause of the fire.

Smoke damage was later visible on the exterior of the house at the front and back.
