A Chinese man facing charges of theft at Tesco in Co Kildare last week has been found to have no passport or identification.

33- year-old  Xi Kai Chen, 6 Bay View, Bettystown, was charged with  theft of €9.80 at Tesco, Maynooth,  and failing to produce a passport/id on the same location.

Evidence was given by Garda Shane Smyth that there were objections to  Kai Chen being granted bail under the Immigration Act.

Defence Solicitor Séamus Boyle outlined how Kai Chen has been living in Ireland for the past 12 years and arrived here on a student visa.

He outlined that Kai Chen's English is not very good and that he has been employed in kitchens since he arrived here.

Judge Desmond Zaidan said: "Don't tell me that he has no English and he is here 12 years."

Kai Chen has been remanded in bail to appear at Kilcock Court tomorrow.
