A Co Kildare District Judge fears that holding a mobile phone while driving is as dangerous as drink driving.

A woman appeared before Naas District Court on a charge of holding a mobile phone, while driving.

She told the court that she did not receive the fixed penalty fine.

The accused told the court that she has recently moved house but that her parents receive her post.

Judge Desmond Zaidan said: "There are people being injured on our roads because of people using their mobile phones, while driving.

It is becoming as bad as drink driving."

Judge Desmond Zaidan imposed the Probation Act Section 1(1).

He said he was imposing the Probation Act 'because of the circumstances.'
