Co Kildare teenager wins gold medal at European Junior Boxing championships in Russia today

It was a big day for 16-year-old Lauren Dempsey from Suncroft as she won a gold medal representing Ireland in the 57kg category at the European Junior Championships in Russia today.

Talented Lauren (16) boxes with her home club of Ryston Boxing Club in Newbridge and she goes to secondary school at Kildare Town Community School.

She won the quarter final and semi final 5-0 by unanimous decision and had a tough final today beating a Russian girl in her home country 3-2.

Talented Lauren won her fight today against Russian counterpart in her home country 3-2.

Meanwhile, Lauren has excelled in her sport and she also has two golden girl gold medals for two years running after boxing in Sweden and has also won best over all female boxer of the international esker boxing cup.

A Champion's Homecoming

A close friend told KildareNow that Lauren is delighted to have won the gold medal after a tough final. "She really deserves it and is such a humble girl. Everyone getting behind her makes her work harder knowing she has the support," they said.

Meanwhile, Lauren is due back at school on Monday morning and the Irish team is due to arrive back in Dublin Airport at 12pm on Thursday, 18 October.
