Kildare County Council's Transport Department is to engage with the Board of Management of St Patrick's School, Celbridge with a view to discussing options to addressing ongoing traffic issues in the area.
At a recent MD meeting, Cathaoirleach of the Celbridge-Leixlip Municipal District, Cllr David Trost (FF) called on the council to complete a full safety assessment of Hazelhatch road, Celbridge, outside St. Patrick's School.
This assessment was to include the pedestrian crossing servicing the school and the GAA club entrance and to “urgently” consider “additional traffic calming measures, as traffic volumes and speeding continue to increase.”
Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Trost explained to the Members that this was an ongoing issue which had existed at St Patrick's School for quite some time.
Cllr Trost said he was “very happy” with the response from the council, which stated that the council's Transport Department would engage with the Board of Management of St Patrick's School to discuss options to address the traffic issues.
It was his view, he said, that the Board of Management “have a role to play” in tackling the problem.
Cllr Declan Ryan (FG) also said he “very much” welcomed the positive response from the council, as traffic in the area was particularly difficult.
Speaking in support of the motion, Cllr Rupert Heather (LAB) noted it was something which had been on the agenda “for a number of years now.”
He said the speed limit on the road in question is not conducive to the fact that there are pedestrians in the area, and in particular students and parents.
Any action which could be taken – particularly in light of the fact that this road would not be included in the Urban 30 speed limit review – would be welcome, he said.
Cllr Heather thanked Cllr Trost for raising the motion.
Also speaking on the motion, Cllr Claire O'Rourke (SD) noted that intervention is “badly needed” as the situation with traffic around the school area is “intolerable.”
A report issued by Kildare County Council stated: “The Transport Department will engage with the Board of Management of St. Patrick’s school to discuss options to address the traffic issues.”
