Funeral to take place of man with no family or friends

Funeral arrangements have finally been made for John McMullen (87) who died in a Maynooth nursing home without any known family or friends.

Moyglare Nursing Home and Reilly's Funeral Directors had made an appeal earlier this week for anybody who knew the retired sailor to come forward.

They were following agreed protocols to publicise the death to formally inform any next of kin.

However it's believed that no family members or friends came forward.

It's understood that the costs of the funeral and burial will now be covered by Moyglare Nursing Home.

There was a large response from KildareNow readers offering sympathy and it's possible that many people who never met John will attend the funeral.

Members of groups representing retired sailors and seamen are also expected to be present to pay their respects.

The Funeral will now take place on Tuesday February 16th at 10am in St Mary's Church, Maynooth followed by burial in Laraghbryan Cemetery.
