Kerry hit the last five points of this dramatic Joe McDonagh Round 1 game at Cedral Park, Newbridge, this afternoon to deny the home side of their first ever victory in this compertition, in their third time to line out at this level.
Kildare trailed by a single point at the break, having played second fiddle for long periods. The home side's first touch certainly needed improvement and in fairness as the game progressed there were signs of that.
A goal from ace scorer, Padraig Boyle, on 12 minutes saw the visitors open a two point lead but in fairness Kildare kept in touch and as the half-time approached the sides were level with three points from Cathal McCabe (2 frees). However just before the break it was that man Padraig Boyle who edged the Kerry man ahead as the sides went to the dressing rooms – Kildare 0-9 Kerry 1-7.
Kildare improved considerably in the second half and looked to be on their way when going four clear after 64 minutes but the Kerry men showed great resiliance never giving up their cause and in the end squezed a one point win.
Kildare had their chances late on but five wides proved costly.
Kildare face a big up-hill battle now in this competition and next week Westmeath are the visitors to Newbridge.
