Contested shoplifting offences detailed in Kildare court

The case was heard on Thursday, January 19 at Naas District Court.

A number of theft allegations were detailed to those in attendance at Naas District Court on Thursday, January 12.

The accusations relate to Patrick Joyce, with an address listed as 36 Kilshane Drive, Finglas, Dublin 11, County Dublin.

The 28-year-old defendant, who appeared via video-link as he was in custody, was charged with five counts of theft.

He also told the court that he had not seen his family since he was placed into custody.

It was heard that the accused had stolen a number of items from shops in Lucan, Naas and Portlaoise on various dates between 2021 and 2022.

Items that were allegedly stolen by Mr Joyce included: two electric scooters (worth €400 each) and numerous bottles of alcohol.

Gardaí added that these items were allegedly not recovered.

Solicitor Tim Kennelly, who stood in for Mr Joyce’s solicitor on the court date in question, said that his client is protesting his innocence in this case.

As the alleged offences took place in Portlaoise, Kildare and Dublin, Sgt Jacob said that he would ask the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), on behalf of Judge Zaidan, if the judge could consider jurisdiction on the non-Kildare matters.

However, Mr Kennelly said he disagreed with this approach, and feared that his client 'may become compromised.'

Judge Zaidan replied that he disagreed with Mr Kennelly’s assertion, and instead adjourned the case to January 26 to allow time for DPP directions.
