Barrow Bridge, Athy
Kildare County Council has confirmed the successful installation of the steel bridge beams for the new bridge over the River Barrow this week. This is a major milestone in the Athy Distributor Road project and the culmination of many months of planning and hard work by BAM Civil Ltd, their various subcontractors, bridge designers Roughan and O’Donovan and Kildare County Council.
Works on the bridge will be ongoing over the coming months as the precast deck panels are installed and the remaining elements of this iconic bridge are completed.
Following the commencement of works in late 2021, the Athy Distributor Road Project has been progressing well over the past year, works will continue to complete the remaining elements of the scheme ahead of the planned completion date in 2024.
Kildare County Council will provide further updates as the project progresses.
The new Athy Distributor Road, upon completion, will include the provision of two new roundabouts, new signalised cross-roads junctions, approximately 3.4km of footpath and cycleway as well as the construction of an 80m single span steel bridge over the River Barrow. The scheme will also include permeability links to several locations in the town of Athy.
The existing railway bridge crossing the River Barrow will be re-purposed as a pedestrian cycle bridge. The Athy Distributor Road will alleviate traffic congestion, creating a safer travel environment in Athy as well as reducing journey times and improving public transport accessibility. The project is fully funded by the Department of Transport as part of Project Ireland 2040.
