‘I may protest over Donadea’, councillor tells Kildare County Council

Cllr Brendan Weld, Fine Gael, made the comments at the latest Clane-Maynooth Municipal District meeting, which was held last week.

A councillor told the latest Clane-Maynooth Municipal District (MD) meeting that he is considering a protest over the state of the wall around Donadea Forest Park.

Fine Gael Cllr Brendan Weld made the comments at the MD meeting on Friday, February 3 last.

The motion read: "That the members of this MD and senior management of the council request a meeting as a matter of urgency with senior management at Coillte to address the serious issue of the deteriorating condition of the wall around Donadea Forest Park."

Cllr Weld told members: "I have been raising this issue on numerous occasions, and it beginning to annoy me, and it is beginning to annoy locals.

He also alleged: "Coillte haven’t even had the decency to let us know about the planning application."

Cllr Weld added: "If this continues, it will be a monument to us as elected members, that we allowed this to happen.

"I do not want to do it, but maybe we should hold a protest at Coillte and block traffic nearby."

He concluded his statement by saying that he wants senior management at Coillte to meet with the MD office.

"I want to see progress and commitment," Cllr Weld said.

CROSS-PARTY SUPPORT

His sentiments were echoed by Independent Cllr Pádraig McEvoy, who also alleged that when a senior member of Coillte attended a meeting with the MD office in the past, he alleged they had been 'contemptuous' towards local representatives.

Fine Gael Cllr Tim Durkan also claimed that Coillte assured them that the group would hold quarterly meetings with the MD office, but said that they have only ever had one meeting with the group.

He also urged Kildare County Council (KCC) to look into whether the wall is a protected structure or not.

"At the moment, the wall looks like a big pile of rubble, and it’s an absolute shame to see it happen," he added.

In response, KCC said that it would investigate whether the structure is a protected one.

The council also said that its chief executive, Sonya Kavanagh, would send a letter to Coillte outlining the MD office’s concerns
