10-month sentence imposed for stealing assorted party items in Kildare store

ITEMS NOT RECOVERED

A ten-month custodial sentence was imposed on a man for stealing from a store in Kildare.

Owen Maughan, with an address given as 26 St Margaret's Halting Site at St Margaret's Road, Ballymun, Dublin 11, County Dublin, was convicted for the offence at Naas District Court on Thursday, February 16.

Gardaí said that the 49-year-old pleaded guilty to stealing around €60 worth of assorted party items from the Woodie’s DIY store in Naas on September 20, 2021.

The items were not recovered.

It was heard that Mr Maughan had 122 previous convictions.

IMPROVEMENTS

Defending barrister Aisling Murphy said that her client had been in custody since December 5 last.

However, she added that he was doing well in custody: he had a job inside the prison and was also studying for his Leaving Certificate exams.

Ms Murphy also pointed out that her client experienced 'a crisis of conscience' and presented himself to gardaí shortly after the incident.

Judge Desmond Zaidan imposed a ten-month custodial sentence on Mr Maughan, to be backdated to when he first went into custody.
