KILDARE: "Maybe they shouldn't be on the road" - council engineer's opinion of some drivers

New stand for Punchestown Racecourse

The junction is near Punchestown Racecourse

A 60 km/h speed limit sign will not be removed from the road leading to a dangerous junction in Naas.

A call for the sign to be taken away from Watch House Cross on the Ballymore road, near Punchestown Racecourse, was made by Cllr Evie Sammon.

She said that there have been numerous accidents at that location and a wall at The Elms enterprise “has been replaced so many times,” she said.

However KCC engineer David Reel said this cannot be done and the sign is statutory.

He said Kildare County Council did an examination of that junction and “people are ignoring a significant volume of signage.”

Commenting on some of the driving observed he said “maybe they shouldn’t be on the road” adding “I don’t know what else you can do.”

According to Kildare County Council the sign required under law and any change

to this would have to be in accordance with a review of speed limits.

Cllr Sammon was told that the location also has “junction ahead”, “stop” “prepare to stop” and “stop ahead” signs as well as the speed limit sign and road markings.
