Judge says couple who crashed car on Valentine's Day in Kildare are ‘lucky to be alive’

Judge Desmond Zaidan (ABOVE) presided over the case.

A couple was accused of possessing suspected cannabis worth an estimated €20,000 after their car crashed on the M7 on Valentine’s Day 'are lucky to be alive.'

That’s according to Judge Desmond Zaidan, who made the comments in Naas District Court on Thursday, March 2.

The allegations relate to David Leigh, 33, and Hayley Kenny, 26, both of 20 O’ Ginty, Garraun, County Kilkenny.

Gardaí accused the duo of possession of drugs with the intent of sale and supply, while Mr Leigh also faced an additional charge of dangerous driving.

It was alleged the duo eventually flipped their own car over 'a few times.'

Bail was granted for Mr Leigh on the following conditions: he must sign on at his local garda station every Monday and Friday, he must surrender his passport and not apply for any travel documents, he must keep the peace, he must observe a curfew from 10pm to 6am, he must provide his phone number to gardaí and be contactable at all times, and he must reside at the listed address.

Ms Kenny was also granted bail, with the exception of the curfew, as it was heard that she works as a healthcare assistant.

The case involving the two defendants will resume on July 12, which is when directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions are due.
