A student from County Kildare has been awarded a scholarship through Bord na Móna's (BNM) 'Pathways to the Future' programme.

Following the launch of the programme last August, the first scholarship presentation for the Scholarship Pathway of the programme took place on Wednesday, February 23, at BNM’s Head Quarters in Newbridge.

On the day, ten successful applicants were awarded scholarships for the programme, including Ryan Hickey from Newbridge, who is currently studying for a BA in Digital Marketing with Analytics.

Commenting on the programme, Tom Donnellan, Chief Executive of BNM, said: "The 'Pathways to the Future' programme is a fantastic opportunity for apprentices, graduates and students to get hands-on, valuable experience with Ireland’s leading climate solutions company.

"I am delighted that we have now awarded the first ten scholarships as part of the Scholarship Pathway and I look forward to seeing what these students will achieve over the course of their studies."

He continued: "This is a unique programme, offering three pathways for those wanting to become part of the solution to climate change.

"These programmes aim to encourage a new generation of ambitious, creative and future-focused women and men to develop their career within a progressive company and to help them inspire change and meet Ireland’s climate goals."

Head of Human Resources and Corporate Affairs at BNM, Sharon Doyle, added: "BNM is delighted to be able to offer support to students interested in looking at new ways to tackle climate change.

"We will now be supporting our ten successful applicants during their studies and will aim to enable them to proactively tackle the key issues linked to climate change, and to learn a wide range of skills alongside the very best experts our industry has to offer."

BACKGROUND

According to BNM, the group launched its ‘Pathways to the Future’ programme 'with a focus on identifying and supporting ambitious students who share the same vision and passion for a climate neutral Ireland.'

The programme consists of three different pathways: a Scholarship Pathway, a Graduate Pathway, and an Apprenticeship Pathway, each offering different choices, educational support and career development opportunities to a broad range of people.

All three of the pathways provide opportunities to work on the front line of climate action and sustainable economic development.

The Bord na Móna Scholarship Pathway is offering the ten successful applicants financial support to for access to studies through scholarships.

The scholarship includes a monetary grant, future work placement opportunity, site visits to Bord na Móna projects and a Bord na Móna assigned mentor, with eligible candidates needing to be enrolled in undergraduate studies (level 8), masters or doctoral studies.
