Cllr Noel Connolly
The reasons why people are parking on public footpaths need to be examined.
A call for Kildare County Council carry out an audit of locations in towns and villages where there is persistent parking on paths was made by Cllr Noel Connolly.
He said the purpose was to address “the underlying reasons through the expansion of parking and other active travel measures.”
A KCC meeting was told that parking in ten towns is regulated by parking bye laws, which will be reviewed over the next two years at which time the councillors will have the opportunity to examine these.
In a report to the meeting, KCC official Celina Barrett said that while enforcement of seven parking bye-laws is carried out by APCOA on the council’s behalf, all other towns and villages outside of the pay parking bye laws, including three maximum stay bye-laws, are enforced by the council, community wardens and the gardaí, who have prime responsibility.
“It is not possible to implement measures at all locations where inappropriate motorist behaviour is the main issue,” said Ms Barrett, adding that the council is willing to work with the councillors to examine reasonable measures that can be implemented.
