The 10th annual of Relay for Life Kildare will take place at Curragh Racecourse this summer.

Relay is a 24 hour community celebration which honours all of those affected by cancer.

At the heart of Relay, teams made up of friends, neighbours, families and colleagues come together in groups and commit to keeping at least one participant walking around the Relay track over the 24 hours.

The Relay track consists of thousands of Candle Bags decorated and dedicated to someone who has survived cancer or have lost their battle and laid out generally in a rectangular shape.

As dusk falls, these candles are lit and the Candle of Hope Ceremony takes place.

Organisers told the Leinster Leader: "This is a really poignant part of Relay as the Candle Bags come alive with memories of those whom they represent, some still with us and some not.

"Cancer never sleeps and neither do we at Relay... we celebrate, remember and fight back."

"Team recruitment is ongoing throughout County Kildare and we are appealing to communities and families in every Town and Village to ask themselves 'can we register a team to support Relay for Life Kildare.'"

Funds raised go initially to Irish Cancer Society (ICS) and filter back to Kildare cancer patients through the various services of ICS, such as: the invaluable Night Nursing Service in the patients home, Care to Drive which transports patients to and from chemotherapy treatments, counselling service for patients and their Helpline.

The ICS also funds life saving research to improve methods of detection and treatment and to continually raise awareness of how cancer can be prevented.

The Relay will take place over June 10 and June 11.

The Relay has raised almost €600,000 since its establishment.
