Kildare families are being told to look at other counties to find accommodation.

People have been advised to seek accommodation in Roscommon, Louth and Leitrim.

Cllr Noel Connolly told a Kildare County Council meeting that  one family facing eviction has decided to emigrate because of the housing crisis.

He also said others facing eviction include a 78 year old woman and a man suffering from cancer who is wondering if he will be able to store his medication in a homeless accommodation setting.

Cllr Nuala Killeen asked what additional resources and supports will be secured by  KCC from the Department of Housing to manage to respond to “the expected surge in homeless families and people following the lifting of the eviction ban and when we can expect to see them.”

KCC official Annette Aspell said anyone who is facing homelessness or needs supports is being urged to contact the council.

In certain circumstances the council will consider using the priority clauses of the allocation scheme for social housing to prevent or alleviate homelessness.

She also said the council is working within the Housing For All initiative launched by the government to deliver housing for people.
