Quicker action is needed to deal with derelict sites: that's according to one Kildare Senator.

Fianna Fáil Senator Fiona O’Loughlin made the comments, which follow similar sentiments expressed by Social Democrats councillor Chris Pender last week.

The Newbridge-based politician said: “I have been working in conjunction with Kildare County Council on the issues of anti-social behaviour and the other issues associated with the derelict Rooske Lodge, beside Sarsfields.

"Having lobbied hard, I managed to get this property added to the derelict sites register on the November 4, 2022.

"Notice was served on owner at that time, and there has been an open line of communication between the owner and Kildare County Council."

Senator O' Loughlin continued: "Its inclusion on the register means that the property is incurring an annual fine of 7 per cent of market value, which is in the region of €56,000 per year while its on the register, which is very significant, and I have no doubt will ensure that the owners will take action."

"There was action taken, and works were visible on site but I believe that has once again stalled."

"I have written to Kildare County Council on this, and I have also called for stronger measures to be put in place in the Seanad to deal with issues like this," she concluded.

In related news, Senator O' Loughlin also urged families intending on applying for school transport services for the first time for the next school year to register before the closing date of Friday, April 28.
