More litter bins are needed in Kildare canalside village

There’s been a call for more litter bins in Sallins.

Local councillor Carmel Kelly says that the town fares badly when compared to other areas.

She told a Naas Municipal District meeting that Sallins has 13 bins while there are 27 in Kill and 14 in Ballymore Eustace.

“My voice is not being heard when it comes to the allocation of bins,” Cllr Kelly said, adding that the town has twice the population of Kill and six times the number of people living in Ballymore.

Cllr Kelly said that opening of the greenway amenity along the canal in Sallins will bring more people and more traffic.

Kildare County Council engineer David Reel said that bins are being taken out of areas where there are too many in place.

Responding to Cllr Fintan Brett, who said €2,000 was allocated for more bins two years ago that have not been deployed, Mr Reel said the real cost associated with bins is managing and disposing litter - not putting them in.

He said KCC will not be “putting in bins for the sake of it” because it has limited resources to manage the litter problem..

“Pardon the pun, but we don’t want to litter the place with bins,” Mr Reel told the meeting.

He added: “The bigger cost is managing and emptying the bins.”

Nevertheless KCC is to review the location of bins in Sallins with a view to “optimising their function in line with the litter bin installation policy and will consider proposals for new bins subject to resources to operate and maintain them.”
