A report on the future of The Curragh is due in a number of weeks: that's according to one Kildare-based Senator.
Fianna Fáil Senator Fiona O’Loughlin held a debate in Seanad on the future of The Curragh, and reiterated her call for national heritage status to be advanced to protect and develop The Curragh.
She said in the Chamber: "As a proud Lillywhite I know only too well the closeness and the pride felt by the people for Kildare to the Curragh Plains.
"The Curragh is a real jewel in the crown of Kildare... it is a place of great importance from an ecological, archaeological, and cultural perspective.
"It is a great place for local people in which to walk and enjoy as it is bordered by Kildare, Newbridge, Milltown, Athgarvan and Kilcullen."
The Senator continued: "I believe we need to do more to support and secure the long-term viability and heritage status of the Curragh.
"Kildare County Council and the Department of Defence had appointed The Paul Hogarth Company, together with other specialist consultants, to undertake a Conservation Management Plan and a Branding, Wayfinding and Interpretation Plan for the Curragh Plains."
"I have in conversation with An Tánaiste that the Office of Public Works may be recommended as the future custodian of the plains, which I would fully support.
"Whilst we do need to see a long-term vision for the Curragh I want to reiterate my call once again for national heritage status for the plains."
"We need to see the Curragh protected and we need to see our wonderful heritage protected and secured in the longer term."
She concluded: "I welcome the fact that the long-term Paul Hogarth company report on the future of the Curragh is due to report in a number of weeks."
