A big change could be on the cards for Kildare town, as a potential location for a new skateboarding park in the area has been suggested.
At the latest Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District meeting, which was held on Thursday, May 17, Fianna Fáil councillor Suzanne Doyle put forward the following motion: "That Kildare County Council (KCC) examine the Weigh Bridge in Kildare town as a possible location for a skate park."
She also pointed to the success of the skate park in Newbridge.
An engineer for KCC said that this location an examination of the location can be carried out to assess the suitability of placing the skate park there.
Her party colleague, Cllr Anne Connolly, also supported her motion, and noted that there was 'a big gap for teens in the area.'
"I would love to see it progressed as quickly as possible," she added.
Fine Gael Cllr Mark Stafford also supported the idea and the proposed location for the skate park, 'especially since Kildare town is often neglected.
He added that other youth amenities could be explored for the region as well.
Social Democrats Cllr Chris Pender also welcomed the suggestion.
Like Cllr Doyle, Cllr Pender, who is a former youth worker, cited the positive reception to the skate park in Newbridge: "The skate park became an integral project, especially since it was led by the very young people seeking it, and we listed to them."
KCC added in its report at the meeting that 'there are a number of considerations' for Weigh Bridge.
