Naas garda station
A man who urinated on a cell door at Naas garda station appeared by videolink at Naas District Court.
Karl Gavigan, 34, whose address was given as 22 Shancastle Lawns, Clondalkin, was prosecuted for criminal damage on May 9 2022 as well as being intoxicated on the same date. He was also prosecuted for failing to appear in court on April 20 last.
Sgt Dave Hanrahan told the court that the defendant was seen on May 9 at 8.30am in a highly intoxicated state and carrying a bottle of white wine.
He added the man was detained and then urinated on the door in the station.
He said he was extremely intoxicated and had 50 previous convictions but only one for breaching the Public Order Act.
Barrister Aisling Murphy said the defendant has seven children and has done an assessment to take up a place in a rehab centre.
She also said he has difficulties with cocaine and prescription medicines but had been sober for a month and “he’s very proud of this.”
She also told the court the defendant is very anxious to get out of custody and start rehab.
The court was also told he is in receipt of social welfare.
The court was also told that the defendant had written a letter of apology though this was not immediately available to the court.
Judge Desmond Zaidan imposed an eight months custody term, less time spent in prison for criminal damage.
He took the other two matters into account.
