A site in Newbridge has seen a reduction in antisocial behaviour, according to one Kildare Senator.
Fianna Fáil Senator Fiona O'Loughlin said that locals had informed her that they had noticed 'a significant reduction' in antisocial behaviour at the area formerly known as Rooske Lodge.
Back in June, the Leinster Leader reported that Rooske Lodge was in the process of being demolished.
Now, Senator O'Loughlin said the following about the site: "I am glad that after a lot of work and having raised the issue at a local and national level to see action taken at Rooske Lodge (former derelict property near Sarsfields).
"This site was causing local residents issues and was attracting high levels of anti social behavior."
She continued: "Having lobbied hard, I managed to get this property added to the derelict sites register on November 4, 2022.
"Notice was served on owner at that time, and there has been an open line of communication between the owner and Kildare County Council.
"Its inclusion on the register meant that the property is incurring an annual fine of 7 per cent of market value, which is in the region of €56,000 per year while its on the register, which is very significant, and I have no doubt will ensure that the owners will take action.
"I spoke to many residents in the area this morning, and they have noticed a significant reduction in anti social behavior since the owners took action," the Senator concluded.
Another local politician who has been monitoring the area is Social Democrats councillor Chris Pender.
Cllr Pender also commented on the site as it stands — he said: "Despite the prolonged inaction and oversight by the property developers, I address the issues surrounding Rooske Lodge with both criticism and relief.
"For far too long, this site was a blight on our community, causing distress to local residents and becoming a hotbed for anti-social behavior.
"Through rigorous lobbying at local and national levels, I managed to have the property added to the derelict sites register on November 4, 2022."
He continued: "While notice was served to the owner and a line of communication was opened with Kildare County Council, the significant delay in developer action is unacceptable.
"The property now incurs a hefty annual penalty, approximately €56,000 or 7 per cent of its market value... this substantial fine for negligence should serve as a stark reminder for owners to act responsibly.
"Residents have reported a considerable decline in anti-social behavior since the owners took action. Yet, one must question: why the prolonged delay?
"Furthermore, it's incumbent upon us to ensure that this land is utilized appropriately and promptly."
Cllr Pender concluded: "Developers must be held accountable, ensuring such neglect doesn't recur; we owe it to our community to remain vigilant and proactive."
