A Newbridge-based councillor has voiced his concerns over Daft.ie's latest housing report.
According to the report from Daft.ie, in Kildare, market rents were on average 12.2 per cent higher in the second quarter of 2023 than a year previously.
Compared to a year ago, rents in the open-market are now 10.7 per cent higher, while the average market rent nationwide in the second quarter is just under €1,800 per month.
This compares to €1,387 in the first quarter of 2020 and a low of just €765 per month seen in late 2011.
Commenting on the findings, Cllr Pender said: "The numbers don't lie; we are witnessing an unprecedented escalation in rents nationwide, with renters feeling the brunt of these steep hikes.
"The current government's approach to housing policy is clearly failing the many who rely on affordable rentals."
He continued: "These aren't just numbers, they represent real people; struggling to find affordable places to live, often sacrificing other basic needs to keep a roof over their heads. This is not sustainable.
"Kildare, my home county, has seen a jump of 12.2 per cent, which is deeply concerning.
"We need a more robust strategy to combat this surge and provide relief to those who are most affected."
Cllr Pender concluded: "The government's inaction and failure to effectively address this crisis is apparent. Renters deserve better. It's time for change."
