A number of gardaí were deployed to the Naas branch of the Bank of Ireland last last night in the wake of a technical issue.

Four uniformed officers were standing in the vicinity of the bank at around 11.30pm - but didn’t appear to take any action as a queue of about ten people formed.

It happened after a technical issue within the Bank of Ireland meant customers were unable to access their accounts via the phone app.

The number of people outside the Naas branch was more than would be normal for that time in the middle of the week.

Gardaí were sent to ATMs around the country after it became clear that a technical problem had occurred - and this was done on a “case by case basis.”

RTE has reported that the issue led to a situation where some customers were able to transfer or withdraw more money than they had in their accounts, leading to large queues at some ATMs as word spread on social media.

In some cases, gardaí were directed to go to areas where lines had formed.

Since then BoI has said the glitch which disrupted its online banking portal 365 online and well as its mobile banking app has been resolved.

In a social media post, the bank said that following the outage yesterday the app and 365 online are back working again and overnight payments will be made to accounts throughout today.

The Central Bank said today it continues to monitor the situation regarding the availability of certain services provided by Bank of Ireland.

According to the Garda Press Office there was an unusual volume of activity at some ATMs across the country yesterday.

In a statement it added that it is aware of issues relating to certain financial institutions.

“On a case by case basis, local decisions were made depending on the public safety and public order presented to members of An Garda Síochána.”

It concluded: “An Garda Síochána remind people of their personal responsibility in carrying out their personal banking.”
