Bob Quinn
A call has been made for St David's Castle in Naas to be brought into State ownership.
Local Green Party councillor Bob Quinn said the castle is an iconic structure in the heart of the Town.
“It is a pivotal property in expanding the rich heritage and cultural quarter of Naas,” said following a visit by Malcolm Noonan, the Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform.
Cllr Quinn said the minister is willing to do this.
“Not alone would St David's Castle single handedly boost the heritage and cultural aspect to the town when it's restored, it will also provide a much needed and greatly expanded tourism sector for the area.”
He added that coupled with the significant investment and expansion of Lawlor's Hotel, the Naas to Sallins greenway, the castle would act “as a very important lynchpin in tying these core pieces of infrastructure together.”
He also said it's vitally important “that the people of Naas have a say in this very important decision."
The structure is privately owned and was privately bought about three years ago.
Kildare County Council has previously indicated it had no interest in buying it.
In 2020 before the present renovation project got underway, Cllr Seamie Moore estimated it would cost up to €2m to renovate it.
Historians say the castle is very much part of the town's history dating back to the original building in the time of King John of England when two parliaments were held there.
It was a central feature during the 13th and 14th centuries as a Norman stronghold.
