Kildare County Council (KCC) has said that it will write to Maynooth Garda Station in relation to its opening hours.
The decision to send the letter to the Garda Station was made at the latest Clane-Maynooth Municipal District (MD) meeting, which was held on Friday, October 6 last.
Fianna Fáil councillor Naoise Ó Cearúil put forward the following motion at the meeting: "That KCC writes to An Garda Síochána requesting that they increase opening and operating times of Maynooth Garda Station."
His motion was seconded by Labour Party Cllr Angela Feeney.
Councillors Angela Feeney and Naoise Ó Cearúil.
Commenting further on his motion, Cllr Ó Cearúil said to members of KCC present at the meeting: "I have received a lot of complaints about the station's opening times, and a desire from people to see it opened more frequently.
"A lot of the time, if people want to get something signed, for example, they need to go to Leixlip Garda Station instead."
Cllr Ó Cearúil continued: "Now, I'm not saying that the office section has to be open 24/7, but the hours do need to be improved... the hours at the moment are just too sporadic.
PUBLIC IMAGE
"The image of the station being closed gives the public the impression that the gardaí aren't being active enough, even though we (referring to the other councillors) know that they are (active)."
After the matter was put to a vote, all members agreed to support Cllr Ó Cearúil's motion.
This means that KCC will now send a letter to Maynooth Garda Station on behalf of the councillors within the MD.
