Practictioners present in Naas District Court on Thursday, October 26 last, were told how a man accidentally gave himself a black eye in his own jail cell.
Tadgh Keely, with an address listed as Harelawn Avenue in Clondalkin, Dublin 22, County Dublin, but who is currently remanded in custody, appeared before Judge Desmond Zaidan via video-link.
The 19-year-old case was due in for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
At one point, Judge Desmond Zaidan noticed that Mr Keely had a black eye, and asked him if he got into a fight in prison.
However, the man replied: "No, I was messing in my cell; I threw a chair at the door and it bounced back and hit me."
This comment made the judge and a number of practictioners laugh.
Mr Keely was also seen on the television screen laughing shortly after he made the comment.
CASE DETAILS
Gardaí told the court that Mr Keely stood accused of taking a pedal cycle from an area located in Naas on September 11, 2022.
The court also heard that on both October 18, 2022 and October 24, 2022, he allegedly stole two separate pedal cycles from Sallins Train Station.
In addition, Mr Keely faces an allegation of driving dangerously in a vehicle at Tuckmilltown in Straffan on May 15 last.
Gardaí claimed that the vehicle was taken from Terenure in County Dublin at an earlier point.
He was accused of causing damage to pillars and gates at the area while driving at a fast speed.
Judge Zaidan remarked that he felt that the alleged offences committed back in May 'were not minor', and refused jurisdiction over them.
However, he accepted jurisdiction over the other alleged offences.
He adjourned all matters to February 22, 2024.
A book of evidence is expected on this date for the alleged May offences, while a hearing is expected for the other alleged offences.
Just before ending the court session, the judge urged Mr Keely to 'mind that eye.'
Mr Keely smiled and responded: "Yeah, I will, thanks."
