Some cast members of Happy Birthday Dear Alice
Sallins Dramatic Society is in full rehearsal mode as they get ready to stage their latest production Happy Birthday Dear Alice.
Written by award winning playwright Bernard Farrell, Happy Birthday Dear Alice is a dark comedy about the efforts of a dysfunctional family to commit their ageing, gentle, yet resilient mother to the uncertain fate of a nursing home. It promises chaos, farce, twists and a belly full of laughs when it goes on stage from the 15th to the 18th of November in Sallins Community Centre.
Experienced director Laura Sheehan from Kill Musical & Dramatic Society is at the helm with a cast of six. Four hail from the Sallins area, with the other two from Naas.
Sallins Dramatic Society is relatively new to the amateur theatre scene. They staged their first production, A Wake in the West, in 2019 and returned after Covid restrictions with the hilarious Second Honeymoon in 2022. Early this year, the society presented a series of One Act Plays, staging three pieces that had a mix of comedy and drama. This will be their first full production in the Sallins Community Centre, which now has a custom-built stage and sound system to allow patrons an authentic theatre experience.
Maggie O’Connell, Chairperson of Sallins Dramatic Society and playing Alice in this production said, “It is a contradiction to say we are working hard in rehearsals yet having fun, but that’s the truth! Happy Birthday Dear Alice is very, very funny and we chose this script because we want our audience to be thoroughly entertained and leave with a huge smile on their face. We are a small group so it is all hands on deck getting ready for the 15th November from finessing lines to hanging wallpaper for the stage. Anyone thinking of buying a ticket to our production from the 15th to 18th November I urge you to just do it! You won’t be disappointed.”
Tickets are on sale now for €15 plus booking fee at Eventbrite https://www. eventbrite.ie/e/happy- birthday-dear-alice-tickets-738901814217.
Dates are from Wednesday 15th to Saturday 18th November 2023. Doors open 7.30pm with the show starting at 8pm.
