A man diagnosed with schizophrenia is now taking medication, Naas District Court was told on Thursday, November 23 last.
The defendant revealed that he was now taking medication when he appeared via video-link to Judge Desmond Zaidan.
Previously, the court was told that the man was so mentally unwell that he did have capacity to advise his legal team.
Judge Desmond Zaidan was told that the man is a serious risk to both himself and others.
The man stands accused of attacking and injuring his mother with a knife.
In one previous court appearance, defending barrister Mark Gibbons, who was acting on behalf of solicitor Cairbre Finan, told the judge that there is still no bed available at the Central Mental Health Hospital for the accused.
Judge Zaidan also pointed out in one previous court appearance that the defendant was refusing to take any prescribed medication to alleviate his condition.
However, on the latest court date, the man said that he was now taking medication to treat his mental condition.
It was heard that directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) are not yet ready in the case.
The court was told by gardaí that the DPP 'needs time to assess the case due to it being a complicated matter.'
At one point, Judge Zaidan asked the man how he was feeling, to which the man replied: "I’m feeling very well, Judge, thank you."
The judge also suggested to Mr Gibbons that he could take the matter to the High Court by means of a bail application.
He adjourned the case to December 7 to allow time for DPP directions, and also ordered for a 'short, updated' psychiatric report on the man.
