Kildare village estate wins climate action award

Kildare village estate wins climate action award

Lucy Fennessy and Cllr Brendan Wyse

The annual Pride in Your Place community-based awards event, organised by Kildare County Council, took place recently and the long established residential area of Ashgrove in Derrinturn came away with four awards including first place in the highly competitive climate action project category.

Led by residents George Hackett and Sylvia Martin, the community group gets full support from the whole community.

Long time committee member, Patricia Gill, passed away recently and Mr Hackett paid tribute to her by remembering the important role she played for the community through the years. Patricia was also involved in the local Women's Shed which is run from the Ashgrove community cabin.

But the future of Ashgrove is bright, with plenty of young volunteers coming through the ranks. This year’s youth participation gong went to Lucy Fennessy, and Lucy received her award from Cllr. Brendan Wyse in the community cabin.

Cllr. Wyse works with the group regularly and said he is impressed with the impressive level of work they manage to get through.

He added: “George and Sylvia are really well organised and are always planning ahead. They are very good at looking at their community and what they need, or what they can do for the environment, and then doing the work to make things happen. Not only that but they get the kids involved as much as they can, which is important."
