Children in Newbridge are being urged to either walk or cycle to school.
Mayor of Newbridge and Fianna Fáil councillor Noel Heavey made his opinion known at the latest Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District (MD) meeting, which was held on Wednesday, December 13 last.
He put forward the following motion to Kildare County Council (KCC) at the meeting: "That the council bring forward a report to outline improved safety measures for students who walk/cycle to Scoil Na Naomh Uilig, Newbridge."
Mayor Heavey's motion was seconded by Fine Gael Cllr Kevin Duffy.
Replying to his motion KCC told Mayor Heavey via a report at the meeting: "The MD Office have surveyed this location and completed drawings for upgrade works.
"The MD Office included this location in a funding request to the National Transport Authority earlier this year. However, this was unsuccessful."

KCC added: "The MD Office will reapply next year as the Office does not have a budget for these types of works, and are reliant on National Transport Authority (NTA) funding to bring projects such as these to fruition."
Commenting further on his motion, Mayor Heavey said: "Everyone in Newbridge walked to school back in the day.
"This would be an ideal pilot to promote the concept (of walking or cycling to school)," he added.
His sentiments were shared by Fine Gael Cllr Peggy O'Dwyer.
Responding to Mayor Heavey, KCC engineer Donal Hodgins said: "The council has 35 projects with the NTA at the moment, and for projects relating to Newbridge, there is around €40 or €50 million worth of NTA schemes.
"As we continue into the future, the possibility for the schemes will dwindle due to funding."
He added: "If there is no money, then there is no money."
Mayor Heavey reiterated his request to see a report in relation to this matter, and Mr Hodgins confirmed that he would bring the report to his attention.
