Drug users are terrified they will be targeted and shot if they disclose the identity of drug dealers.

That’s according to Judge Desmond Zaidan, who told a Naas District Court sitting that “for every 1,000 users (who appear before me) I get one supplier.”

He said the authorities need to address the issue.

Otherwise, he added, the drug lords “will get a free run.”

He said there are plenty of drug lords, not just the well known ones as well as “aspiring drug lords.”

He said users rarely say where they got the drugs because they are terrified they will be shot or otherwise targeted.

He said the problem is accentuated because many people going through a rough patch in their lives sometimes turn to drugs or alcohol.

“The drug lords are using people who come before the court for drug use offences.”

He added: “Even the gardaí are playing catch up.”
