A cyclist who was prosecuted at Naas District Court on Thursday, January 11 last for having no lights on his bike 'only cycles in well-lit areas.'
That's according to the man's solicitor, who made the comments to Judge Desmond Zaidan while representing his client, who was not present in court on the date in question.
The solicitor admitted that his client admitted to committing the offence, which took place in County Kildare.
Speaking further about his client and his background, the solicitor told the judge: "He goes everywhere on the bike, Judge.
"He only cycles in well-lit areas, and he hasn't been causing any issues (due to his cycling)."
"Well, if you came across him on his bike in a dark alleyway..." the judge responded, to which the solicitor said: "Oh, I agree, Judge, but he doesn't live in, say, the countryside, he lives in a town."
Judge Zaidan then jokingly asked him: "Does your client have any relationship to the Green Party?" which prompted some laughter.
A garda told the judge that the man has previous convictions, but none for this type of offence.
Judge Zaidan decided to apply the Probation Act on the man's case, but still maintained that 'cycling with no lights on is dangerous.'
