A new mural depicting St Brigid in Kildare Town
Kildare Town Heritage Centre said the eagerly anticipated unveiling of the Mural ' St Brigid of Kildare' - a large scale piece of street art in Kildare town - will be unveiled on St Brigid's Day.
This spray painted mural of St. Brigid has been completed by an internationally renowned artist on two walls of McHugh’s pharmacy in the Market Square.
It is within view of St. Brigid’s Cathedral, which stands on the original monastic site of Brigid.
It has been attracting growing positive social media attention as the artist worked on it during the past number of weeks.
It is the first of two commissioned pieces by the same artist to celebrate Brigid 1500.
The mural will be officially launched on Thursday 1st February, St. Brigid’s Day just after midday.
This will follow an ecumenical service in St. Brigid’s Cathedral conducted by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Kildare and Laughlin and the Church of Ireland Bishop of Kildare and Meath.
The two bishops and congregation will take the short walk from the cathedral to the Market Square to dedicate the mural immediately after the service.
This momentous occasion will also feature 'A Song for Brigid, a song which has been composed in conjunction with the mural will be performed live by Newbridge Gospel Choir and the composer, adding a musical tribute to the celebration.
A significant crowd is expected to attend the event.
'A New Dress for St Brigid'
Also being unveiled will be a sculpture 'A New Dress for St. Brigid,' - a project led by local Community Artist Beth Murphy from Willow Wonder, symbolising the community's dedication to honoring St. Brigid's legacy.
Visitors can add a piece of calico to her cloak and make a wish or say a prayer.
