UPDATE: Bail granted for men accused of committing assault offence in Newbridge, County Kildare

Naas Courthouse.

Bail has been granted for two accused of taking part in an assault on a man in County Kildare.

Last month, gardaí alleged to Judge Desmond Zaidan that Mark Whyte, 37, with an address listed as 2597 Dara Park in Newbridge and James Rowan, 44, with an address listed as 2 Flinter’s Close in Athy.

Gardaí claimed that both defendants, in addition to two unspecified female defendants (who did not appear in court on the date in question) assaulted a person on the Station Road in Newbridge on January 21 last.

This caused the alleged injured party suffered cuts to their head, according to the gardaí.

In addition, it was alleged that items were stolen from the alleged injured party by the defendants.

Although the identities of the two female defendants in the case were not disclosed on the previous date, they were disclosed on the latest date (Thursday, February 8 last).

Shauna Lawlor, 31, of 59 Rosconnell Square in Newbridge, and Danielle Murphy, 31, of Apartment 11, Block B, The Harbour, Nelson Street in Athy, have also been accused of taking part in the incident on the Station Road.

Judge Zaidan said that he was told that the two women had recently had children, and thus, the State felt that it was appropriate to grant them both bail.

He explained that he felt that the two male defendants (who appeared via video-link as they were both remanded in custody at the time) should also be granted bail, as the case came before him 'as an alleged common design.'

As such, the judge granted both Mr Rowan and Mr Whyte bail until the case resumes on June 6 for all defendants, and to allow time for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The judge also gave gardaí liberty to re-enter the case at short notice.
