A former psychology student who appeared at Naas District Court on Thursday, February 15 last was fined for assaulting a garda.

Appearing before Judge Desmond Zaidan was Calvin Carlyle, with addresses given as Rossfield Park, Tallaght, Dublin 24, County Dublin, and Cloonmore Park, Tallaght.

The 26-year-old was in attendance for the execution of a bench warrant related to a Criminal Courts of Justice (CCJ) matter in Dublin, for an alleged trespass offence committed in 2020.

Gardaí detailed an incident involving Mr Carlyle which occurred on November 15, 2020 in Blessington.

It was heard that Mr Carlyle, along with some other male passengers, were in a car that crashed.

They were spotted by gardaí, and the gardaí brought them back to a bus stop so that they could return home to Tallaght.

Judge Desmond Zaidan presided over the case, which was held in Naas District Court.

However, gardaí said that Mr Carlyle, who was drunk at the time, became verbally abusive towards them and was subsquently arrested.

Later, when he was placed in a garda patrol car, he kicked one of the gardaí sat in the car.

Defending barrister Sarah Connolly said that her client was a former psychology student, and that he hopes to continue his studies in the near-future.

It was heard that he is residing with his grandmother at present.

Judge Zaidan fined Mr Carlyle €750 for the assault on the garda, which is to be paid within three months.

Mr Carlyle's CCJ matter will resume on March 6 and Judge Zaidan remanded him on continuing bail until this date.
