Thousands of customers incorrectly charged by major energy provider

SSE Airtricity has informed an estimated 17,000 customers about the error

Electricity price hike: Average bill to increase by almost €10 a month

SSE Airtricity customers were overcharged

Thousands of customers of energy company SSE Airtricity have been sent incorrect bills it has emerged, with some customers being overcharged and others charged too little.

It is understood that the energy supplier is due to refund any money overcharged and is also making a small goodwill payment to the estimated 17,000 customers affected.

According to the Irish Independent, one electricity customer was incorrectly told he owed €287 and was sent an estimated bill even though he has a smart meter.

Later communication said this bill was now €0.

An email sent to those customers affected confirmed that there had been a charging error.

“The amount of electricity units you have been billed for is correct, but some of these electricity units have been charged at a rate that is different to the time band in which they were used.

“This error has now been fixed and all your electricity is now being billed at the correct unit rate,” the email outlined.

A spokesperson told the Irish Independent: “We are working through the agreed remediation plan. We are contacting all affected customers directly and in all cases, the impact on the customer is cost neutralised through re-billing. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused”.
